In January 2013, Tyler Vessels embarked on a mission trip to Uganda that would forever change his life. During his visit, he met Pastor John Walusimbi, his wife Grace, and their children—a family whose lives radiated the love of Jesus. Tyler and his team spent a month working alongside Pastor John’s church and Liberty Preparatory School. While Tyler eventually returned to the United States, a piece of his heart stayed in Uganda with the Walusimbi family and their inspiring ministry. Over the next five years, Tyler and Pastor John remained in frequent communication.
In June 2018, Tyler, his sister Kaela, and longtime friend Carl traveled back to Uganda to explore ways to further support Pastor John’s work. Inspired by what they witnessed, they returned home and began the journey of establishing Educating With Hope, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
Our mission at Educating With Hope is to provide financial support, encouragement, and resources to Christian organizations—both locally and globally—that bring the hope of the Gospel and quality education to children in need. Today, our primary focus is supporting Liberty School in Masaka, Uganda, a school dedicated to transforming lives through faith, education, and opportunity.
We believe that every child deserves the chance to dream, learn, and thrive, and we are committed to walking alongside Liberty School as they fulfill their mission to equip students with the tools they need to build brighter futures. Together, we are planting seeds of hope that will grow for generations to come.
Liberty School was founded in January 1997 by Pastor John Walusimbi, who continues to serve as the school’s director. His wife, Grace, serves as the principal. Located in Masaka, Uganda, Liberty is a boarding school that offers education to students in grades 1 through 7. The school’s mission is to provide hope and opportunity to children from disadvantaged backgrounds—many of whom would otherwise be unable to afford an education.
At Liberty, academic excellence is important, but Pastor John firmly believes that “An education without Jesus only creates clever devils.” This conviction shapes every aspect of the school’s approach. The light of Christ shines through Liberty’s teachings and programs, setting it apart from other schools in the region.
What truly makes Liberty unique is its focus on developing bold, confident student leaders grounded in their faith. Students actively participate in worship, prayer, and leadership roles across various projects, including animal husbandry and other essential school activities. Liberty is not only raising up future leaders but nurturing young people who will carry the love of Christ into their communities and beyond.
Through its holistic approach to education—rooted in both academics and spiritual growth—Liberty School is helping transform the lives of its students, preparing them to make a lasting impact on their families and the world around them.
